![]() Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) is the key state member university of the “Project 211” under the leadership of the Ministry of Education. While its main focus is economics and management, there are also many students studying law, liberal arts and science. The purpose of the university is to assist in the development of a socialist market economy in China. The main responsibility is to train first-class specialized personnel in management, teaching and research for organizations such as government finance and taxation departments, banking and insurance institutions, enterprises, universities and research institutions. CUFE has four campuses with an area of over 1500 mu (approximately 106 hectares or 252 acres): the Main Campus (39 South College Rd., Haidian District), Qinghe Campus (Zhufang, Haidian District) and the almost-completed campus in Changping District. CUFE, with a library of over 600,000 books and total fixed assets of RMB 350 million, has well-equipped teaching facilities, such as language labs, computer labs, multi-media classrooms, etc., that are essential to the modernization of higher education in finance and economicsAt present, CUFE has 8 schools, 6 independent departments, and more than 20 research institutions as well as a graduate school, a school of continuing education and a school of international cultural exchange. CUFE offers 37 baccalaureates in the field of economics, management, law, liberal arts and science and engineering. It also offers 30 graduate programs and 15 Ph.D. programs as well as MBA program, MPAcc program, MPA program and J.M program in applied economics, theoretical economics, public administration, law, and business administration. In these programs finance, national economics, public finance, and accounting are the key subjects in Beijing and throughout China. Additionally, adult education programs serve the community through full-time programs, correspondence programs, evening school and advanced vocational training programs, which are divided into two levels: undergraduate courses and two-year associate courses. The University has set up some 40 correspondence centers in 15 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across China. The total number of students currently enrolled in CUFE is 15,000. Among them 7122 are full-time students (undergraduates 5205, postgraduates and doctoral candidates 1917) and 320 are international students and the students from Hong Kong, Macao and Chinese Taipei. What’s more, there are 7000 correspondence students and night school students. The number of staff is 1040, 563 of whom are full-time faculty with about 300 professors and associate professors. Quite a number of teachers are well known across China. The University invites hundreds of renowned experts and scholars as guest professors from home and abroad. CUFE has a big high-ranking research team, especially in economics and management. CUFE makes every effort to facilitate international exchange and cooperation. It has established extensive relations with universities and organizations in such countries and regions as the USA, Japan, the UK, Australia, South Korea, Russia, Ukraine, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and Chinese Taipei. The University has a long history of cooperation with the World Bank Institute (WBI). In 1983, the WBI set up a cooperative training center and since then more than 20 training courses have been held. CUFE also has good relations with such organizations as the Zurich Financial Services Group, Asahi & Co., the AXA Insurance Group, and the Metropolitan Insurance Company. The Institute of Actuaries in Britain, the Chartered Insurance Institute in Britain and the Australian Insurance Institute have set up centers in the University. Every year CUFE invites scores of foreign experts for joint research and short-term lectures and full-semester lectures in English and other specialized courses. It also sends its faculty members to many countries as visiting scholars, joint researchers, and partners in advanced joint studies. International students are recruited throughout the world and postgraduates come from Hong Kong, Macao and Chinese Taipei. On the occasion of the University’s 50th anniversary, President Jiang Zemin inscribed on September, 29th, 1999:“ strive hard to make greater progress so as to provide large numbers of well-qualified personnel in management for modernization.” Jiang’s inscription indicates that the state leaders show much care for the University and express great hopes for its development. CUFE is confident that the University will be comprehensive in curriculums and research-oriented with distinctive feature in the 21st century, aiming to be well-known and first- class university in the world.
